Maine isn't exactly a hot bed for tornadoes, but they do rear their ugly heads every once in a while and the first one of the year touched down on Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, an EF1 tornado touched down at 5:40 PM in Caribou on Monday, August 12. The twister took out about 120 trees, but luckily no one was injured and no structures were damaged.

And EF1 tornado is classified as a tornado that does moderate damage with winds between 86 and 100 mph. This one just qualified as an EF1 as the estimated wind speed was 90 mph.

For comparison, here is the Enhanced Fujita scale that is used to determine the severity of tornadoes.

F0 65–85 mph Light damage
EF1 86–110 mph Moderate damage
EF2 111–135 mph Considerable damage
EF3 136–165 mph Severe damage
EF4 166–200 mph Devastating damage
EF5 >200 mph Incredible damage

The pictures shared by the National Weather Service show that even at 90 mph, a tornado can still do significant damage.
