Whoopie: The Whoopie Pie Festival is Back in Dover-Foxcroft, Maine
After all, it IS Maine's official snack.
Get ready to eat your weight in whoopie pies at the Whoopie Pie Festival on June 24 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in Dover-Foxcroft.
It's not a pie, but sort of a cookie or cake with a creamy filling. It's been a favorite of Mainer's for over a century. We love this treat so much there's a mascot! Whoopie pies have gained in popularity and the variety available is crazy. The Whoopie Pie Festival has been gathering the best bakers from around New England to offer samples and compete for prizes and bragging rights. It became Maine’s Official State Treat in 2011!
The Maine Whoopie Pie Festival is the largest annual event in Piscataquis County. Speaking of big, did you know that the world's largest whoopie pie weighed in at 1,000 pounds and was created in South Portland, Maine in 2011? They sold it in pieces and then used the money to send whoopie pies to soldiers overseas. It's nice to see Piscataquis County get some well-deserved love. They've got a lot to offer with excellent fishing at Sebec Lake, quiet hikes on the Appalachian Trail, or live theater and movies at the Center Theatre.
For one amazing day, you can sample whoopie pies in a wide variety of creative flavor combinations and vote for your favorites. But organizers know you can’t just eat whoopie pies from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (they've tried), so there are plenty of other things do to at the festival. They have a 'Earn Your Whoopie Pie 3K Race/Walk' at 8 a.m., with lots of arts, crafts, and foods offered by more than 100 vendors all while live music plays. Also rides and games for kids of all ages, whoopie pie eating contests, and more.
