A couple of times a year we do this funny thing where we mess around with our time and move our clocks back and forth. Time is arbitrary and numbers aren’t real.

In March and November when we do this dance, a debate gets brought up on if we should even be participating in Daylight Savings Time, if it should be permanent, if we should just stick to Standard Time, etc.

What do you think?

I am personally a component for permanent Daylight Savings Time (DST) which would grant us one hour longer of daylight each day and move our extremely depressing winter sunset from 3:45 p.m. to 4:45 p.m.

This mere one-hour change would have significant positive impacts on my mental well-being and I know I’m not the only one.

However, there is a major implication here. If the states in the EST time zone opted for a permanent DST, this would cause a sunrise in Ontonagon, MI to be around 9:40 a.m. which is really messed up. So, all the eastern time states couldn’t make the same move, but if we didn’t all agree, things could get super confusing.

Is there a winning solution for all?

According to an article by WMTW, the Legislature in Maine proposed two bills to keep clocks at DST year-round in 2019 and both proposals would actually have moved Maine to Atlantic Time, an hour ahead of EST with our Canadian neighbors.

Now, I don’t know if I would go that far. I’d rather be linked with Boston than Nova Scotia.

News Center Maine recently posted an article about how some states can opt out of DST permanently and just remain on Standard Time, but if states want to remain permanently on DST then they need congressional approval. Of course my choice comes with the most hoops to jump through.

I’m throwing a lot at you here. It may honestly just be easier to keep things as they are. We’re all pretty used to the dark depressing winter, anyway, but I am just really not looking forward to black skies at 4 p.m. There has to be a better way!
