Were Tiny Homes Illegal in Maine Until Yesterday?
The really quick answer to this question is, yes and no. Does that make sense? Okay, maybe we should do a little bit more explaining here on this one.
First of all, what is a tiny home? In short, it's a home that's tiny. Yeah, a gripping explanation, right? Tiny homes have been surging in popularity around the country for the last decade, including right here in Maine. However, until yesterday, it may have been illegal to live in one here in the Pine Tree State.
According to Custom Diggs website, "A tiny home is viewed as a space consisting of 100 square feet to 400 square feet. Some tiny homes are less than 100 square feet and can include up to 500 square feet. But a small home is a bit larger and ranges from 400 square feet to approximately 1,000 square feet."
According to WABI TV 5, a bill that was approved by the legislature yesterday and is expected to be signed by the Governor, now states that Maine municipalities must approve and recognize tiny homes as primary dwellings. Before the creation of this bill, Maine municipalities could approve or deny each tiny home on a case-by-case basis. Moving forward, pending a signature from Janet Mills, that will no longer be the case.
The bill, originally penned by Representative Dave McCrea (D) of Fort Fairfield, specifies that towns will need to recognize these little houses as single-family dwellings or as an accessory to an existing structure.
