South Portland Police shared a video of a man stealing two cartons of cigarettes from a convenience store on February 23rd. This guy has got some stones to try to pull this off.

No Smoking

I've never smoked a cigarette in my life, but my mom smoked heavily, and that habit caused her to develop lung cancer and passed away 20 years ago at the age of 58, just four years older than I am now.

That's my public service announcement to you. If you smoke, quit. It will change your life by giving you a longer one. You make the choice. If you need help quitting, Maine Quit Link can help.

Now back to our regularly scheduled story.

The clip is short, but it shows a man at the count of the convenience store in South Portland after he appears to have asked for two cartons of Marlboro Black. The cashier grabs the two cartons and puts them down on the counter. Then he appears to bend down to possibly reach for a bag to put them in. That's when the guy grabs the cartons and runs out the door.

Why Steal Cigarettes?

That's a great question with a simple answer. Let's do some math, shall we? Keep in mind, I'm just going by what I found on the internet, so numbers here may vary:

  • Cost of a carton of Marlboro Black - 10 packs: $57

  • + $20 Maine excise tax

  • x 2 cartons

Grand Total for two cartons = $154

That's why he stole them. Cigarettes ain't cheap.

As of this writing, I have not seen any updates on this case, but I have a feeling he'll be found if he hasn't already.
