According to Maine State Police Spokeswoman, Shannon Moss, a driver is dead following a Saturday afternoon crash at the West Gardiner Toll Plaza in Litchfield.

At 2:45 on Saturday afternoon, a vehicle travelling south on Interstate 95 left the roadway and struck a guardrail. Following the impact with the guardrail the vehicle was redirected back into the lane of travel and struck a pylon at the West Gardiner toll plaza.

After striking the pylon the vehicle burst into flames. Members of the Maine State Police, Gardiner Ambulance Service, Augusta Fire, Litchfield Fire and West Gardiner fire departments assisted at the scene. The driver was pronounced dead when crews arrived.

An autopsy will be performed by the office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine if the driver possibly suffered a medical event prior to the crash.
