U.S. News and World Report released their rankings of the country’s best high schools.

 

For the third year in a row, the number one high school in Maine, according to U.S. News & World Report, is Greely High in Cumberland. It was also the only Maine school to make the top 10% of all high schools in the country.

There were 113 schools in Maine that U.S. News and World Report ranked for the new report out on April 26. Here are the top 10.

  1. Greely High School, Cumberland
  2. Kennebunk High School
  3. Maine School of Science & Mathematics, Limestone
  4. Cape Elizabeth High School
  5. Falmouth High School
  6. Camden Hills Regional High School, Rockport
  7. Yarmouth High School
  8. Greenville Consolidated School
  9. Katahdin Middle/High School, Stacyville
  10. Scarborough High School

MaineBiz broke down some of the numbers and found that while Maine did well, scores this year were not as good as in previous years. Greely was the only high school in Maine to be in the top 10%. And only 17 of the Maine schools made the country’s top 50%.

Big cities in Maine proved that bigger isn't always better! Portland High School ranked 52, Deering High School and Lewiston High School both came in below 54. Only Bangor High School did well and was ranked 13th in the state.

How are schools ranked?

U.S. News ranks based on students’ college readiness, state assessments, underserved student performance, curriculum breadth, and graduation rates. And yes, they had to adjust scoring because of the pandemic and the wild effects it had on schools.
