Think This Summer in Maine Sucked? Here’s Some Data to Prove It
I think we can all agree that the summer of 2023 in Maine has not been what any of us had hoped. Heavy rain for days on end, humidity levels high, and not nearly as many beach days as we deserved. This summer has sucked. How much has it sucked? Here's some of the data for this summer to confirm the level of suck it brought us.
How Much Rain Did We Get?
Are you like me and had a lawn all summer that was always wet and you're just now able to tackle it with three weeks left of summer? No wonder I have deer constantly in my backyard feeding off my lawn, and trees that are the greenest and most lush I've ever seen them.
According to News 8 WMTW, Augusta had 22 days of rain in June. Portland had over 17 inches of rain this summer, yet never had a day that hit 90 degrees. But it looks like that's going to happen this week.
According to South Turner Maine Weather, Turner saw a total of just under 28 inches of rain total, from June through August. My basement did not deal well with that.
How Muggy Was This Summer?
You've heard the saying, "It's not the heat. It's the humidity." Well, the heat hasn't been bad this summer until this week, but the humidity has been nearly record-breaking.
According to CBS 13, Maine has had the second most humid summer on record so far. The average dew point temperature from June 1 to August 17 was an average of 60.38 degrees Fahrenheit. Dew point is the temperature air must be cooled to become saturated with water vapor, which makes the air feel muggy. The higher the dew point, the grosser the air feels. This summer was pretty gross.
Let's hope the summer of 2024 lets us actually enjoy it and mow our lawns, rather than flooding our basements.
