There's a new face joining the police force in Buxton, Maine...and honestly, it's a cute one.

K-9 Unit

The Buxton Police Department has announced they have a new cop on the force, Falco the dog.

This handsome boy will be living and training with Buxton Police's Officer Mains. After 14 grueling weeks, Falco will be ready to hit the streets to take down the baddies.

Falco is a Belgium Malinois and German Shepherd mix, two of the most reliable police dog breeds.

K-9 Cop Duties

Falco will be expected to handle the duties that other standard police dogs deal with, which is a ton.

As the post explains, Falco will work on drug detection, tracking missing people, search structures, protection, deterrence, article searches, and arrests. Falco and Officer Mains will also do public demonstrations at schools and events to show the public all the good they are doing for the community.

While not on duty, Falco will live with Officer Mains to continue ongoing training, eat treats, and be a dog.

K-9 & Handler Relationship

Becoming a police dog handler is quite a rigorous process. It's not just the dog that gets the training. The handler is there every step of the way, learning a completely new law enforcement practice.

The Buxton Police wrote that Officer Mains had to apply, go through a state interview process, and finally head down to Pennsylvania to select his pup. It's clear that the relationship between handler and dog is extremely important. Falco's not just a working dog, but will become part of Officer Mains' family. It's difficult to imagine a strained relationship working in anyone's favor.

The Buxton Police Department expects Falco and Officer Mains to be on the beat by late Spring. They also mention that updates will be posted on their Facebook page.

Good luck to Falco and Officer Mains. I can tell you that this Buxton resident is very excited to see this good boy join the force.
