The US Customs House on Fore Street in Portland is seen by thousands of people a day as they drive and walk through the Old Port, but not many have ever seen what it looks like inside.

The building was opened in 1874 after the Great Portland Fire and was needed for the busy port that Portland had become as a place to check people and goods into the country that arrived by ship.

Today the building still stands and has remained relatively unchanged since it was built a century and a half ago. Its architecture is beautiful on the outside, but inside is what you really need to see to appreciate its beauty.

Since it's a Government owned building, not many people have set foot inside, but a few years ago Norm Karkos of WMTW did with a camera crew giving us a look at this amazing piece of history.
