Maine has about 80 lighthouses to view from the outside, but it's a special treat when we get to climb inside a lighthouse and see the inner workings and architecture. Spring Point Lighthouse is open for tours this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 4, 5 and 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It has a long break water leading out to it.

You can watch the sailboats, ferries and tankers coming and going from Portland Harbor. Frequently, fishermen along the breakwater are dangling their rods in the water hoping for a catch.

While at Spring Point, you can explore Fort Preble, view Portland Head Light, Fort Gorges and Fort Scammell and some of the beautiful Calendar Islands. Pick up a lunch or a snack and spend some time enjoying the outstanding scenery.
