The Conway Scenic Railroad station was built in 1874 by the Portsmouth, Great Falls and Conway Railroad. It was purchased by the Boston and Maine Railroad in 1890 and operated over the Conway branch for 87 years, when trains stopped running in 1972. Two years later, the Conway Scenic Railroad took over operations and continues to this day.

The Conway Scenic recognizes its heritage as the current owners of the railroad painted two locomotives in the colors of the former Maine Central Railroad. These two workhorses are typically run on the Mountaineer excursion train, on those very same tracks the Maine Central ran on.

Breathtaking Views on the Mountaineer

The above video from the Conway Scenic Railroad shows you just how beautiful this ride from Conway to Fabyan Station in Caroll, New Hampshire is. I have ridden on the Mountainer train several times and it's worth the trip.

If you want the best views, though, grab tickets for the dome car, where you sit in a glass dome with 360-degree views as you travel along the rails. You'll want to get your tickets sooner rather than later, because dome seats are limited and go for a premium price, but it's well worth it. Get your tickets at conwayscenic.com.
