The government has been shut down for weeks with no end in sight, meaning anyone who holds down a government job is either out of work or without pay (or both).

That means not only cutting into savings and potentially struggling to make ends meet, but instantly cutting out any extra leisure activities like going to the movies, eating out at nice restaurants, and going to live performances in their free time. When you have to rehash your budget, these fun outings are the first to go.

Luckily, the Portland Symphony Orchestra realizes that the shutdown is hitting many Mainers pretty hard. In response, the PSO is offering up to five free tickets to furloughed federal government workers for their Sunday afternoon performance of their "Discovery: Winter Wonderland" concert at the Merrill Auditorium in Portland, according to the Press Herald.

Tickets will be offered exclusively to walk-up patrons who have a valid government ID at the PSO box office at 20 Myrtle St. until tickets run out. The box office will be open Friday and Saturday from non to 6pm and Sunday at 12:30pm. Sunday’s performance starts at 2:30 p.m.

The Discovery concert is an hour-long family-friendly celebration featuring music inspired by Maine winter. It includes an "instrument petting zoo" before the show at 1pm for anyone who wishes to check out the various instruments in the symphony!
