Thanks to high levels of covid in Southern Maine, the people behind Portland Pride, have canceled it again.

Portland Pride is Maine's biggest LGBTQ Pride celebration. But again, there will be no parade, festival, or any other in-person events according to the Bangor Daily News.  That's despite Governor Janet Mills ending the limits on both indoor and outdoor gatherings are gone. Even social distancing has ended except for eating inside and bars.

When the pandemic tore through everything last year, the solution was to have a centralized organization for people to connect with. Fundraisers, social events, and support groups couldn't get together last year. So Pride Across Maine was born to keep people connected with each other. They will be hosting some virtual events.

There doesn't have to be a giant parade with a mile-long pride flag to show our pride. Oh sure it helps and is a ton of fun, but it's not the important part of Pride. The important messages are not lost this year. They are a sense of community and acceptance.

Portland Pride may have canceled their celebrations and parade, but there are other celebrations in Maine still happening in person.  Bar Harbor’s Pride festival is still happening June 11-13. It all starts with an outdoor drag show at 5:30 p.m. Friday, June 11, at Fogtown Brewing in Ellsworth. Saturday there will be a dog walk, festival, and Sunday there is an event for LGBTQ youth.

Bangor Pride will have its 'parade' Saturday, June 26. It's not a parade in the traditional sense of the word. As covid showed us, ya gotta be creative. So it's a 'stationary' parade at Bass Park, at the Hollywood Casino Racetrack. You move around the racetrack to look at the floats. Keeps things moving and less crowding on sidewalks.
