Portland Food Co-Op Now Open [PHOTOS]
Portland area residents who have longed for their own grocery store where they can buy organic food from Maine farmers received an early Christmas present when the Portland Food Co-Op opened its doors this week, according to WMTW.
The Portland television news station reported that it cost Portland Food Co-Op volunteers $1.6 million to construct the 5,000 square foot building located at 290 Congress St. The new co-op has more than 2,000 members who paid $100 each and is available to the general public as well, WMTW reported.
Some 20 people work at the new store which will have a grand opening on Dec. 20.
