The former Kiwanis Pool on Douglass Street in Portland was recently shut down as the facility was starting to age. It was on that same site that drew a happy crowd that was eager to celebrate the beginning of a new era for public swimming and community gatherings.

One of the most moving moments of the day was a symbolic gesture that honored the legacy of the old Kiwanis Pool, which served the community faithfully for 64 years. Attendees tossed one City commemorative coin and 63 pennies into the footing forms, with each coin representing a year of service, creating a powerful visual and emotional tribute that connected Portland’s past with its future.

The new Community Pool is more than just a place to swim. It's a promise to future generations—a welcoming space for families, friends, and individuals of all ages to gather, stay active, and build lasting memories. From swim lessons to summer fun, this pool will be a cornerstone for public health, inclusivity, and community engagement.

City leaders and residents alike expressed gratitude and excitement, emphasizing that this project reflects Portland’s commitment to wellness and togetherness.
The new facility will have a lap pool, a leisure pool, a splash pad, and waterslides, along with a new changing room and restrooms.
