Police Issue Warning About Bears Roaming Around Berwick
The Berwick Police Department sent out a warning on Facebook that bears have been seen in the area along some precautions you should take.
According to the post, police haves seen a bear roaming around on Old Sanford Road and another on Pine Hill Road last seen headed towards the Pine Hill Mobile Home Park. They recommend you lock up your trash and keep an eye on your pets.
According to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, bear attacks are rare, but there are some things you can to prevent them from happening.
First and foremost report aggressive bears immediately by calling 911. If you spot a bear in your backyard, make loud noises from a safe distance, shout or bang pots together in an attempt to scare the bear away. Once the bear leaves, remove things like bird feeders, trash, grills and pet food that might attract bears.
If a bear approaches you, make yourself look bigger by raising your hands over your head and shouting "Hey bear!" while you back away. Yes, seriously.
