Maine lobsterman, Cory Hawkes has been fishing Maine waters for practically his whole life, but he’s never witnessed something like this.

According to News Center Maine, Cory found himself hauling traps in Cundy Harbor off Ragged Island and spotted something strange in the water.

At first, he thought it could be a sunfish or porpoises but this time, nope, it was something else entirely.

"There were like six or seven fins, probably within a couple hundred yards of the boat in every direction. Right in the middle of the bay."

Cory was surrounded by sharks!

And not just one shark, an entire group of great whites. He grabbed his phone and filmed the entire encounter.

He shared the footage with family, including his shark loving cousin and then called the Department of Marine Resources to report it, as per the article.

Cory says,

"Me personally, if I do go swimming—and everyone picks on me for it—I generally wear a wetsuit," Hawkes said. "Now I’m thinkin’, I ain’t going in no wetsuit anymore. Not gonna take any chances and make myself look more like a piece of food than I already do."

According to the article, shark experts told him that they were probably there because of a close by food source like a dead mammal or fish below the surface that lured them in.

As you can see in the video above, these sharks were not little guys, they were huge!

As we’ve seen, shark warnings have been very high this summer in Maine, even Harpswell officials have raised warnings on shark sightings at nearby Cedar Beach.

If you see a shark, please report it immediately to 207-893-2810 so the beach officials can responded appropriately.
