Why Doesn’t Maine Have a State Fair?
I was chatting with a friend recently, and she started raving about how much she used to have at the Idaho State Fair. All the rides, the food, the chaos and it got me thinking.. why doesn’t Maine have a state fair?
It seems like to me like, every other state has one? You know what I’m talking about, the big-deal, deep-fried everything, pig showing, Ferris-wheel, fair... so where’s ours?
Like the Windsor Fair, The Common Ground Fair, and the Skowhegan State Fair. These fairs may not be the official state title but they totally are worth visiting. Each fair brings it’s own fair, flare.
This is also kind of historical too.
Way back in the hay day, Maine decided to support most local fairs spread across the state instead of having one large centralized state fair. It’s a good idea with so many different communities and such a spread out population.
It makes much more sense now that I understand.

Plus, Maine really loves tradition, so we’ll keep it this way. Each fair has it’s own flavor, like blueberry pie-eating to horse pulls, you can’t just choose one! You have to go to all!
So the answer is no, Maine doesn’t technically have a “State Fair,” but, they do have 24 licensed agricultural fairs spread out for all to enjoy, according to Visit All States.
