Railroads have changed a lot since the first steam locomotive rolled on track in the 1800s. Steam engines are gone except for heritage railroads like The Conway Scenic Railroad.
The house I grew up in in South Paris had a window on the landing of our stairs that I could look out when I heard the train horn blow its horn as it approached the crossing at the end of my street. Ever since I can remember, I have loved trains.

That love of trains has always made me interested in the history of railroads, particularly of railroad stations. Before the automobile became the way to travel for Americans, the train was how you traveled.
Many beautiful railroad stations were built and after the decline of passenger rail, many of those stations were torn down, including two very large ones in Portland:
The Grand Trunk Station on India Street
Union Station on St. John Street
Both these beautiful buildings were torn down, the most famous of them being Union Station as a famous photograph shows the tower falling to the ground.
Railroad stations in Maine that are still standing have a long history and luckily many of them are preserved and in use as something new.
