Maine Fisherman Catches Giant Lobster Estimated at 130 to 140 Years Old
There was a time when I thought that when lobstermen caught a rare, oddly colored lobster, it was fascinating. Then it seemed like every other week, another rare colored lobster was being pulled up in traps, making me think, "Are they really rare?"
Recently, a giant lobster was caught in a Maine lobster fisherman's trap, and it's way more exciting to see that a blue lobster.
Lobster Fisherman Tyler Rice
There's no mistaking the fact that Tyler Rice is a Maine Fisherman. He's got a decent Maine accent. I did too, growing up in Maine, but when I got into radio, I had to work to get rid of it. I managed to do it, but I can bring it back in an instant if the need ever arises.
Tyler has a TikTok channel where he posts videos while he's out on the boat. He has nearly 100 videos shot as he pulls up traps and shows the interesting things he finds there, like a lobster shedding its shell.
Giant Lobster Catch
Back in late May of 2025, Tyler pulls up a trap with one of the largest lobsters he's ever pulled up. It's a male lobster, and they live very long lives. As Tyler says in the video, "They are 7 years per pound that they weigh. This one is nearly 20 pounds and is estimated to be nearly 20 pounds. Going back to the formula: 7 years per pound x roughly 19 pounds puts the age of this lobster around 130 to 140 years old!
Just think about that. This giant lobster was born around 1895 and is still alive and kicking. What a crazy world we live in.
