Maine lawmakers will hold a public hearing tomorrow (Tuesday, Feb 1, 2022) to discuss the possibility of legalizing the drug found inside magic mushrooms, psilocybin.

But what exactly is psilocybin? Well, according to WIKI,

Psilocybin mushrooms, commonly known as magic mushrooms, mushrooms or shrooms, are a polyphyletic, informal group of fungi that contain psilocybin which turns into psilocin upon ingestion. The psychedelic effects tend to appear around 20 minutes after ingestion and can last up to 6 hours. Physical effects including nausea, vomiting, euphoria, muscle weakness or relaxation, drowsiness, and lack of coordination may occur.

According to the Kennebec Journal, the bill is sponsored by Maine Democrat, Donna Bailey, of Saco. Bailey told the KJ,

“I have heard from so many folks from across the state saying they’re waiting anxiously to try this or they have used it in other places and how tremendously it has helped them. I really believe we need to put forward the framework to allow the folks in Maine to be able to benefit.”

The bill, which is about 40 pages long, would ride the coattails of Maine's recent marijuana law. The drug would only be allowed to be cultivated and distributed at state-licensed facilities in Maine.

However, before anyone could even receive a psilocybin treatment, they would have to undergo a preparation session that would involve speaking with a councilor about 'goals and expectations' of the treatment.

The Kennebec Journal article goes on to emphasize that unlike Maine's pot law, residents would not be allowed to just purchase the psilocybin for take-home use, and the state would also have to pre-determine that concentration level of the drug allowed to be administered at the designated centers.
