Did You See the Rare Phenomenon Called a Fire Rainbow Over Maine?
Have you looked up recently and seen a piece of rainbow stuck in the sky?
There was this bizarre and beautiful streak of rainbow brilliance sitting pretty in the sky and we’re all wondering what the heck it is.
Peggy Sloan posted a photo of it in Unexplained Maine Facebook page saying, “Saw this today, no idea what it is.”
Some are wondering if this could be a reflection off some giant pane of glass? But then there are others, like me, who can’t help but think it might be a little gift from Mother Nature herself.
Like, a beautiful reward for simply looking up from our screens and noticing the beauty that’s always been there, waiting for us. I know, deep, right?
So, what exactly is this mysterious piece of rainbow floating in the sky?
A Gift from the Sky or Just a Trick of the Light?
Based on the comments and some google research, our best guess is that it could be a circumhorizontal arc, sometimes nicknamed a fire rainbow.
According to Atoptics, this is a rare atmospheric phenomenon and it doesn't happen often.
This happens when the sun passes through ice crystals in high altitude cirrus clouds which bends the light into that awesome burst of rainbow. However, for this to happen, conditions have to be just right, so when it shows up, it’s super special.

Whether you are team science, or maybe thinking it’s more spiritual, it’s an awesome phenomena to witness nonetheless.
So what do you think it was? An optical illusion or a fire rainbow?
