Maine is One of the Few States Where You Can Own This Exotic Animal
I can never understand why people would want to own exotic animals as pets. Many states ban the ownership of exotic pets, but Maine is one of the few states that does not prohibit ownership of this particular exotic pet, which is very far from its home.
What Qualifies as an Exotic Animal?
An exotic animal or pet is defined as any animal not native to the country where it is kept in captivity. Domesticated pets like dogs and cats don't typically fall into the category of exotic animals. Hamsters, rats, guinea pigs, and rabbits can all be considered exotic animals, but typically the ones you might think of the most are much bigger and some much, much stronger.
It's Legal in Maine to Own a Kangaroo
Yep. You read that right. If you live in Maine, you can own a kangaroo the large animal typically found in Australia. The only catch is that you need to get a permit. I'm not sure exactly what the qualifications are to get a kangaroo permit, but if you want a kangaroo, you can find out easily enough.
Eleven other states allow you to own a kangaroo with West Virginia, Wisconsin, and South Carolina the three that don't even require a permit.

Do You Want a Kangaroo in Maine?
Let's think about this for a moment though. A Kangaroo lives in Australia where the climate is warmer than Maine. Snow is rarely seen except for a few states in Australia's southeast.
Also, kangaroos can beat the crap out of you if you aren't careful. When a kangaroo stands upright balancing on its tail, it's ready to fight and you are going to lose. See what I mean in this video of a man who encountered a kangaroo who grabbed a hold of his dog.
Luckily he was able to rescue the dog, but it could have turned out a lot worse.
So if you still want to own a kangaroo in Maine, go for it. Don't say I didn't warn you.
