Jersey Mike's Sub Shop is opening it's second Maine store in the former Payless Shoe Source space at the Windham Mall. It was vacated after the company filed for bankruptcy in 2019 and closed all their stores in North America, reemerging as an online retailer.

Recently the windows of the former shoe store were covered with the Jersey Mike's Subs logo.

Jersey Mike's Subs is based out of, you guessed it, New Jersey. It originated in 1956 and was franchised in 1987 and now has 1700 locations throughout the United States. The first Jersey Mike's franchise in Maine opened in 2020 at Gallery Boulevard in Scarborough near Walmart.

What makes Jersey Mike's unique is that they slice their meats and cheeses right in front of you, trim and cook roast beef right in the store and offer their signature red wine vinegar and olive oil blend to top off your sub with.

The location in Windham adds to the list of new restaurants that have opened in Windham in the past year. Portland Pie Company opened in the old Friendly's building and Stockhouse Restaurant & Sandbar Pub took over the former Buck's Naked BBQ space. There's also a plan to open a new brewery and restaurant in the former fire station in South Windham Village. The list keeps growing.
