I was driving back from camping the other weekend and was passing Saugus, MA, and for some reason I was craving Boston Market in a bad way. I was sad to see the Boston Market in Saugus location on Route 1 had closed, and appeared to be closed for awhile. I then proceeded to dive down a Boston Market rabbit hole on the world wide web and was determined to find out the reason behind the demise of a chain I once held so near and dear.

Boston Market was a big part of my personality in the late 90's and early 2000's. It was in the semi regular dinner rotation and then when I got my license, I was there more often than I'd like to admit.

I was a regular at the Fitchburg Boston Market location at Twin City Plaza. They knew my order by heart: a quarter dark meat two sides, macaroni and cheese and creamed spinach. I know what you might be  thinking "That's an aggressive amount of dairy, Kira." And to that I say, the heart wants what is wants.

Especially in the last two years, I have watched Boston Market locations dwindle and permanently close their doors one by one. According to Nation's Restaurant News, there have been many lawsuits filed against the rotisserie chicken chain, the biggest one being from the food supplier, U.S Foods which sued Boston Market for $11.3 million in unpaid bills.

The site goes on to explain that multiple landlords sued the company for similar financial issues, including the company’s former owner, McDonald’s.

It's not looking good for this comfort food serving restaurant from my youth. We can only hope that the 27 existing Boston Market locations in the U.S (as of March of 2024) continue to operate or this chain could be a distant memory, like the Ground Round (are there still any of those around?)

How many of the remaining Boston Market locations are in New England?

The short answer is not enough. According Boston Market's restaurant locator there are only 2 New England States that still have operating stores:

Connecticut:

  • Newington
    Milford
    Old Greenwich
    Meriden

Massachusetts:

  • Brockton
  • Worcester
  • Framingham  (in the Framingham Service Plaza Westbound)
  • Westborough (Mass Turnpike Westbound I-90 Milepost 10 Service Area 6A)
