I haven't had many run ins with Beavers in my day. Most of my beaver knowledge stems from the Nickelodeon show Angry Beavers. (my Millennials know what I'm talking about!) Daggett and Norbert were a pretty good representation of the Beaver community (in my opinion).

A beaver from Massachusetts has captured the hearts of many and has been referred to as a "diva" on more than one occasion. Apparently she likes to misbehave and can act out when things don't go her way.

Meet Nibi:

According to NPR, Nibi was abandoned and discovered on the side of the road a few years ago when she was just a baby. She was saved and cared for by Newhouse Wildlife Rescue in Chelmsford, Massachusetts.

Nibi, is now two-years-old. Though that seems like a young age to humans, in the beaver world that is the age where they move out on their own, find a mate and build a dam of their own.

Nibi's rescuers disagreed with this point of view. They believed that Nibi was far from ready to go out on her own and her likelihood to survive without human intervention was incredibly low. With the Winter quickly approaching Nibi would most likely experience hypothermia or starvation.

This disagreement ultimately went through state courts and 29,000 signatures were accumulated on an online petition advocating for Nibi to remain at the rescue center.

Governor Maura Healey even got involved. She released the following statement:

Nibi will not be released into the wild. YAY!

The folks over at Newhouse Wildlife rescue are so happy with this outcome. They wanted it to be clear this was never about making a wild animal their pet. It's about advocating for animal that doesn't have the ability to speak up for herself.

The hope is one day Nibi will be trained enough that they feel comfortable releasing her into the wild. In the meantime she will be keeping up her diva lifestyle in Chelmsford, Massachusetts. You go, girl.
