Lock your vehicles, Mainers.

According to News Center Maine, that’s the message Portland police are driving home as firearms are being stolen from unlocked vehicles across the city.

Of course, this isn't the first time we've heard a report of a firearm being stolen out of a vehicle, but the news station stated there has been an increase in gun thefts from unlocked vehicles.

It’s important to remember that this isn't just about losing a valuable item—it’s about firearms ending up in the wrong hands. It’s common sense: If you’ve got a dangerous weapon in your vehicle, lock your doors.

This rise in gun theft comes at an interesting time.

Maine and New Hampshire are consistently ranked as two of the safest states in the nation, according to Newsweek and other outlets, but as we approach the one-year anniversary of the tragic Lewiston mass shootings, it’s a reminder that gun violence isn’t something we can ignore.

Just because Maine has a good safety track record doesn’t mean we’re immune to the risks.

Here's the bottom line: lock your car.

Whether it's a gun, a laptop, or a bag of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, leaving your doors unlocked is essentially an invite for trouble. It’s not only about keeping your belongings safe but also about preventing dangerous items from falling into the wrong hands.

And don’t forget, even if your doors are locked, keep valuables—especially firearms—out of sight.
