National Weather Service Predicts a White Christmas Likely For Maine

Fresh off the heels of a 70 degree November day in Maine, winter loves are getting nervous about what the cold season throughout New England is going to look like. They should be worried, too.

The National Weather Service has released their seasonal outlook for the winter that will cover December of 2024 through February of 2025. And if you're a snow lover or a cold lover, the forthcoming winter in Maine is probably not going to be your favorite.

The NWS is predicting that Maine and all of New England will likely see temperatures above or well above normal averages through the winter. It's an echo of what the National Weather Service predicted for much of the fall, where it warned that 60 and 70 degree days into November were likely.

For those dreaming of a white Christmas, you might be able to live that dream. The NWS precipitation outlook for the winter says New England will simply see a normal amount of precipitation per yearly averages, there are pockets of cold and precipitation activity showing for December.

That is likely to bring Maine's first snowstorm to the forefront sometime in December. Depending on when it arrives, there's a likelihood for a white Christmas. That would be a far cry from last winter when New England didn't see its first substantial snowstorm until January.

The NWS isn't alone in their forecast for the winter in Maine. Charlie Lopresti of WGME and WPFO is predicting almost the same exact thing. Warmer than normal temperatures throughout the winter and below-average snowfall. There will be storms, but many of them will bring rain or a mix versus straight snow.
