One of the Best Rivers for Whitewater Rafting in the US is Right Here in Maine
As warmer weather rolls into Maine, it's easy to start daydreaming about all fun to be had this summer. One of those premier experiences is whitewater rafting. The exciting activity is a popular one for Mainers and tourists alike, and one of those whitewater rafting experiences is getting some serious love from a popular site.
Let's Roam, an online travel magazine, recently published an article titled, "15 Best Whitewater Rafting in the US." One of the 15 highlighted in the story was Maine's own Kennebec River. As the state's third longest river at 170 miles, the Kennebec is well-known for its outdoor fun, especially whitewater rafting.
Numerous tour companies take rafters north of The Forks to get the ultimate whitewater rafting experience. The different classes make it challenging, but ultimately one of the best in the country, according to Let's Roam. Here's a little more of what they had to say about the Kennebec.
The Kennebec River is one of the only good whitewater rafting destinations in the Northeast portion of the United States. Flowing from Harris Station Dam, it consists of a 12-mile portion of mostly Class IV rapids and a big drop known as Magic Falls. It’s a fun river with a moderate set of rapids, especially on the upper portion of the river.
It's great to see the recognition for the Kennebec, a river that Mainers and tourists have enjoyed for generations. While the Northeast isn't exactly well-known for whitewater, the Kennebec is a true exception to that rule.
The Kennebec is joined by some seriously iconic rivers on Let's Roam's list, including the Colorado River in Arizona, West Virginia's Gauley River, and even the Deerfield River in Massachusetts. You can see the entire list here.
What better way to ring in the summer than by seeing the Kennebec getting serious love for its whitewater rafting? It's more great national publicity for our wondrous state.
