Best Maine Businesses

We're really lucky, when you think about it. With all the businesses that exist in the world, and all the big chains stores that essentially "sell it all" across the country (including here in Northern New England), we have local "mom and pop" businesses that offer the same products.

But the reason that they don't fold when going head-to-head with the above-mentioned chain stores, is because these local businesses -- whether it's food, clothing, landscaping equipment -- are not just fellow residents, but they truly care about us.

And sometimes, all it takes is a phone call to prove it.

Brunswick Home and Garden

Nestled on a side street in Brunswick, Maine, right down the road from the Brunswick Police Station, is one of those aforementioned local "mom and pop" shops dedicated to something that a lot of Mainers tend to take seriously -- landscaping.

Whether they live on or near farmland, or they simply take pride in the presentation of their lawn and garden in their neighborhood, Mainers tend to flock to lawn and garden-type shops like Brunswick Home and Garden on Stanwood Street.

Is it the quality of the equipment there? Sure. They provide reliable products for all seasons, whether it's snow blowers, ride-on mowers, or something somewhere in between.

But it goes further than the equipment. It's the unmatched customer service that puts them heads and tails above the rest. Customer service that this writer has experienced first-hand from start to finish.

Last spring, I bought a weed wacker/weed eater/trimmer from Brunswick Home and Garden. Super quick, super easy, super painless, and super fair priced. But I knew I made the right decision to shop there when one of the employees asked if I ever started one up before. When I told him "not since I was a kid," his response was simple.

Follow me outside.

He spent the next couple minutes going step-by-step through exactly how to start it, had me start it first hand (quite honestly the best way for me to learn and retain info -- anything hands on), and then I went about my way.

Fast forward to more recently, when, to my surprise, my phone lit up with a call from Brunswick Home and Garden. I more picked up out of curiosity, and I'm glad I did.

Hi there, it's Brunswick Home and Garden. A little while ago, you purchased a lawn trimmer from us. I just want to let you know that there's been a recall on it. All you have to do is bring it back to the store, and we'll repair it fully, free of charge. I'd get it in sooner than later, though, that way we can make sure it's up and running for you before you'll need it next season! Just bring it in whenever and we'll take care of it, no cost.

I'm sure on same level, they're required to make that phone call to customers. But it was also just the overall approach of it -- the person was super friendly, spoke like he genuinely wanted to help and it wasn't a phone call out of obligation, and just spoke to me like an actual human and neighbor, not just some statistic in their sales book.

Local wins every time, and it's great to see a local business like Brunswick Home and Garden thrive (and if they somehow aren't, they should be, so get there ASAP and give them your business -- you won't regret it). And, for the record, this isn't an ad. They have no idea I'm writing this.

This is just a message from an overly satisfied customer highlighting a local business that deserves it their flowers (which, ironically, they can probably help you grow, too.)
