Frozen Funk – A Night of Skating, Sliding and Music at Deering Oaks Park
Get ready for a fun night on the ice at Deering Oaks Park as the ice skating rink is transforming into an 80s-inspired dance party. You don’t need to be a great skater to join in the fun. Whether you’re skating, sliding, or just enjoying the music, everyone is welcome, and there is no cost to enter.
"Frozen Funk" is the name of this fun night in Portland that will feature an ’80s throwback soundtrack. Space Gallery will provide colorful lighting set to the music with lots of energy and a lively atmosphere, even on a cold Maine night. Just to be sure, though, make sure you bundle up, because you never know when a Maine winter is going to turn on you.
However, if you are cold, you can also warm up with hot chocolate inside the Castle in Deering Oakes Park during the event. Bring your friends, lace up your skates, and enjoy a memorable winter evening on the ice.
Skate rentals will be available on site for those who don’t have their own, making it easy for anyone to take part. Retro outfits are encouraged, so break out your neon, leg warmers, and classic ’80s style to match the vibe. Whether you stay for a few songs or the entire night, “Frozen Funk” promises to be a unique way to enjoy winter in Portland and make the most of the season before spring finally arrives in Maine.
It's all put on by the Portland, Maine, Parks, Recreation & Facilities Department, and it happens on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Deering Oaks Park from 6 to 8 p.m. In case of a rain date, the event will be pushed ahead by a week to Saturday, January 24, 2026
