The Waldo Theater, located in downtown Waldoboro, Maine (yes, Waldoboro has a downtown) has recently been renovated and is open for performances. This lovely Greek revival style building constructed in 1936 has been painstakingly restored with an upgraded sound system and theater lighting according to a story in the Press Herald.

The Waldo Theater was originally built by the Cooney family, who ran it as a theater and a place for the locals to watch movies. It was a grand addition to the quaint downtown. They ran the theater until 1957. It seems television had something to do with its demise as people no longer flocked to the movies.

The building was sold and remained closed until some time in the 1980s when the community rallied together with a variety show to get the theater opened up once again. It successfully hosted plays, musicals, movies and even theater camps for the local kids until it closed once again in 2014. It became too difficult to maintain the building until renewed interest began in 2018 to open it once again.

Several fundraisers and untold hours of volunteer work later, the Waldo Theater is open for business again. The opening was delayed due to covid19 as many things have been but it is now set to host the Maine Fiddle Fest October 15 and 16. It will also be offering seasonal movies. Full details are at its website. Always a pleasure to share news of a building and its programs rising from the ashes.
