A construction project will get underway in Norway on April 10 that will restore a bridge that was built in 1953.

The Tannery Brook Bridge

The Tannery Brook Bridge got its name from a former tannery in Norway where animal hides were processed and turned into leather. The tannery is long gone now, but the bridge is named after the tannery, likely because a lot of the chemicals used in the tanning process were dumped into the nearby brook. We weren't as smart as we are today about the environment.

The unique concrete railing is on both sides, each with a lamp on each side, which I'm not sure if it works today. You'd miss it if you didn't know what you were looking for. If you're ever on Main Street in Norway look for the studios of our friends WOXO and WIGY and the concrete railing will be right next to it.

The road right in front of the WOXO/WIGY studios is going to be narrowed to allow traffic to continue to flow through downtown Norway. If you're approaching the construction zone, you'll want to slow down. Workers will be present and easing past the construction area helps ensure their safety.

The Fine Details

The Maine DOT released a video in 2022 before construction on Tannery Bridge began. MDOT typically puts these videos on YouTube to let anyone interested get an in-depth look at the project. It's a little dull, but if you want all the details, this will cover it for you.
