Here’s Why Boothbay Harbor’s Historic Footbridge is One of Maine’s Most Beautiful Walks
You guys… I still can’t get over this. Just an hour and a half from Lewiston-Auburn sits a place that feels like you’ve crossed into an entirely different world.
Boothbay Harbor isn’t just another Maine town it’s a postcard come to life.
Fishing boats gently rock in the harbor, salty ocean air fills every breath, and the waterfront is lined with the kind of charm that makes you slow down without even realizing it.
While exploring, I stumbled upon one of the harbor’s coolest hidden gems: the historic Bridgehouse, built in 1902 and perched right on the famous footbridge that stretches across the water.
The little red building once housed the bridge tender, the person responsible for operating the bridge for passing boats.

According to local history that is displayed in the window, this little house has worn many hats over the years from an art studio to a gift shop and even carries a local legend involving rum-smuggling during Prohibition.
But honestly, the real magic is the walk itself. Especially if you do it with someone you love.
Standing on that long wooden footbridge with water on both sides, boats drifting below, and the harbor unfolding in front of you feels like stepping into another era.
It’s one of those places that reminds you why people fall in love with coastal Maine.

If you’ve never been to Boothbay Harbor, put it on your list.
Wander the shops, grab some seafood, watch the boats come and go, and make sure you take the walk across this bridge. Because sometimes the very best adventures aren’t across the country...they’re hiding just 90 minutes from home.
