Move over moose, there's a new giant monster wreaking havoc on Maine's streets. However, it's not an animal you would expect to see up here in the wild.

This image was shared by Debbie Maynard of Limestone. And yes, those are American Bison just rolling through Aroostook County. Not exactly what you would expect to see on a normal Maine day.

The photos were taken by Debbie's husband on his way to Presque Isle. The bison were coming from the Nordic Trail Center trail and rolling right through.

Debbie's husband was on Highway 167 traveling from Fort Fairfield to Presque Isle when these incredible creatures made their public appearance.

Debbie shared her husband's incredible photos in the "My Aroostook!" Facebook page, a group dedicated to sharing all that's unique and wonderful about Maine's largest county.

You might say to yourself "Wait, Maine has wild buffalo? How did I not know this?" No, Maine does not have wild buffalo. In fact, there haven't been for a long, long time if really ever.

While the mighty bison originally was found over a large swath of North America, and then mass slaughter of the animal before the 20th Century nearly made the beast extinct.

However, thanks to various protections the animal has made a solid comeback, and can be seen living across the Great Plains, West, and in Canada.

As for this herd, according to Newscenter Maine, the bison had escaped from a local farm and traveled over a mile to a local ski mountain.

Sadly, one of the bison was fatally struck by a car. Thankfully the driver was uninjured, but the car was totaled.

This incredible circumstance certainly gives us another reason to pay attention while driving.

A big thank you to Debbie and her husband for sharing these incredible images with us.
