Maine is Freaking Out Over This Bug With Giant Fake Eyes
Someone in Maine recently posted a video on Maine Insects Facebook Page that’s got me bugging out, literally.
Saying, “What the heck is this creepy looking thing?? I have never seen anything like it!! No idea how long this was on my shoe while I was wearing it!"
The reel shows a close-up of this odd big-eyed-looking insect with wings chilling inside a shoe.
It has a long gray and black body with two giant eye-looking spots on it’s head that feels like it’s staring directly into your soul.
The comment sections, as per usual, did not disappoint, pointing out that this is an Eastern Click Beetle.
I don’t know about you, but I have never seen one of these creatures before.
Meet the Eastern Click Beetle The Bug That Clicks and Stares
It’s definitely strange looking, but harmless. The Easter Click Beetle was given that name because of the “click” sound it makes when it flaps it’s wings.
That just gave me goosebumps. Insects, other then grasshoppers are not supposed to make clicking sounds! They dots on the head? Not eyes, but markings that scare off predators. Gosh, mother nature is so cool.
You can see them around this time through the summer, mostly in thick wooded areas and gardens. But if you are lucky, like this Facebook poster, you’ll find one in your sneaker. They are mostly nocturnal, as per Wikipedia.

However, if I see this guy jump out of my shoe and click his wings, I’m spilling my coffee.
