Bendy straws that change color as you sip, mint monster ice cream sundaes, and old-fashioned cheeseburgers are just some of the things that come to mind when you think of Friendly’s.

The classic diner was a staple to many childhoods for its menu that could please any picky eater and its ice cream selection that could satisfy all tastes.

Unfortunately, like many places during the tough times, COVID-19 swept away a large chunk of Friendly’s restaurants across the east coast. Business Insider shared in 2020 that the family-friendly establishment that was founded in 1935 closed most of its doors after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy during the recent pandemic.

Friendly’s in Maine

Maine used to be home to many Friendly’s restaurants scattered throughout our state. We had multiple in Portland and additional locations in Augusta, Waterville, Windham, Brunswick, Ellsworth, Freeport, and Lewiston.

Am I missing any?

The diners slowly but surely have been closing everywhere after a hard couple of years. The restaurant industry is difficult and competitive enough these days, add a pandemic to top of that and it can be hard to keep your head above water.

The Augusta location closed in 2019 which was one of 24 restaurants across the Northeast to close down. There is now one lone soldier left in Maine.

South Portland Friendly’s

The last standing Friendly’s in Maine is sitting pretty in South Portland. She has stood the test of time and is still going strong at 210 Maine Mall Road.

Through trials and tribulations, the SoPo diner stays consistent, bringing smiles and full bellies to families daily. But, with the Friendly’s track record in Maine, it could just be a matter of time before they close their doors.

So, if you’re itching for a Reese’s mint ice cream monster sundae the way I am right now, I’d go get it sooner rather than later.
