One of Maine’s Former Governor’s Homes Now on “Most Endangered” List
If you find yourself in Skowhegan, you may have driven past this house and never even noticed or realized that it is super historic.
According to the Maine Preservations List, the Governor Abner Coburn House has officially been added to Maine’s Perseveration's 'Most Endangered Historic Places' list in 2025, just in time for Halloween.
Built in 1849, this home was owned by Abner Coburn he was a baron of lumber as well as one of the founding men of Maine’s Republican Party, lastly, he was our 30th governor of Maine, according to WMTW.
Pretty impressive resume for the 1800s, but above that, his house itself was a stunning place. This 19th century piece of architecture used to be the talk of the town, but now, not so much.

This home is very old and as you can see in the photos, it looks to be so damaged that the amount of work it would take to bring it back to life would be insurmountable.
The goal of this list is to bring more awareness and support to these historic spots before they are lost and gone forever. History is important, it is what makes us, us.
So, the next time you find yourself in Skowhegan and pass one of these old historic buildings, find out what the story is and spread it.
There may just be something magical inside.
