If you get a call or email or even a knock at your door saying they are from Central Maine Power, wait before you respond.

CMP has just issued a serious press release warning customers in the state of Maine about a surge in ongoing scam, and some of them are getting pretty convincing.

According to CMP, scammers are using high pressure tactics to trick folks into handing over personal information. This is not what anyone wants to happen.

The press release adds that scammers may warn your power is about to be shut off or claim your payment didn’t go through.

From there, they’ll try to get your personal information to “fix” the issue and in some cases, they may even pose as utility workers to seem more convincing.

Here’s what you should always remember: CMP will never demand immediate payment, especially through any prepaid card or weird payment methods.

They also will not ask you to see your bill or ever want to take photos of it.

Here’s the key thing to remember:

CMP will never demand immediate payment, especially through prepaid cards or unusual methods. They also won’t ask to see your bill, take photos of it, or come inside your home to use your devices.

Central Maine Power Warning Maine Customers of Potential Scam

If someone claims to be from CMP, you can always verify by calling their official customer service line at 1-800-750-4000.

The real CMP employees will have proper ID with them. They will also drive vehicles that are clearly marked with the company name.

Some of the most common scams right now include threats of  fake meter upgrades, disconnection and messages about “system glitches” which asks customers to resend payment information. Do NOT do that, unless you are sure they are the real deal.

Bottom line? Trust your gut!

If something feels off, call CMP directly and inquire.

Staying cautious could save you from becoming the next target.
