So I guess Blue Monday is coming up. Have you ever heard of it? Us either. Apparently, according to it’s the so-called most depressing day of the year.

It ends up being on the third Monday in January and that means it’ll happen on the 19th of January. Honesty, that kind of tracks.

Why? Because at this point, many of us have broken our New Year’s Resolutions, our bank accounts are screaming at us because of the dent we made during the holidays and winter has definitely decided to not go anywhere anytime soon.

Where did Blue Monday come from?

According to the experts from Croud, it started about 20 years ago in 2004, when a psychologist named Cliff Arnall was asked by Sky Travel, to come up with formula to help sell after the holidays.

Because of the bad weather, high debt, and holiday gloom, he claimed the third Monday in January to be coined Blue Monday. All to sell vacations! It was really just created as a marketing plow.

Here’s the thing, Blue Monday, is not real.

Blue Monday: Real Feeling, Fake Science

However, even though it isn’t truly a thing, it has become a bit of a social experiment, where the more you hear about it, the more it sort of seeps into your brain.

So, if Blue Monday does feel real for you, we’ve got some tips to overcome it!

First up, move around! There is nothing better than a little exercise to get those good juices pumping and forget your woes.

Second, make a list. Start small, with the things you know you can accomplish. Being productive makes you feel less stressed.

Get some daylight, yes, it still exists, even here in Maine when the sun leaves as soon as it comes. But still, grab a little Vitamin D.

And try eating heathier (no judgement) just saying. We all know those holiday cookies were delicious and you deserved them, but give your body the gift of some veggies now. It will thank you.

And lastly, positive self talk never hurt anyone. In fact, studies show that this can completely change and uplift your mood, if you are consistent.

Healthier habits and little daily self pep talks, hopefully will do the trick!

So if this month feels heavy, remember, you're not broken, just human!
