I Just Had the Best Fish and Chips Ever in Maine

I love fish and chips and just had the best I've ever had in Maine.

It's a tiny 'lil' place on the newly hipster Washington Avenue at the bottom of Munjoy Hill in Portland. I read about this place in the Press Herald, because even though I've driven by it a million times, its truly easy to miss.

What makes this fish and chips the best in Maine?

The Press Herald said that the owners Ashley Wolf and Will Durst, who are married have a pretty obvious creed:

We’re in Maine, where we’re lucky to have beautiful potatoes and beautiful fish, and we put the two together.

It wasn't just the fish that was delicate, delicious and so fresh - but those fries were on point too! It's a really cool process beyond slathering a piece of fish in batter. Because the batter was so light and fluffy. Even in their sandwiches too!

The Press Herald found out how it's so damn delicious. The fish and chips start with 7 ounces of local hake that is dunked in a frothy batter made with beer (for airiness), vodka (for quick-evaporating crunch bubbles), and a combination of all-purpose flour and cornstarch that gives each fillet a sturdy, yet delicate coating when it is deep-fried. Yes!! It's like nothing else I've ever had.

Growing up in Idaho, I loved fish and chips. Thank God Maine knows how to do it perfectly

When fish and chips were my favorite food as a kid in Idaho, my only choice was Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips. It was a fast food place and I thought it was the best. There are only a couple left, and they are in Ohio. It was my introduction to malt vinegar and fried fish. I'm grateful I had fish and chips as a kid, but even more grateful I live in a state that knows what they are doing.
