8 Things We’d Like To See Go Into The Augusta K-Mart Space
It is kind of hard to believe that it has been nearly four years since the Augusta, Maine K-Mart location closed its doors for the final time. After running several months worth of "going out of business" sales, the store closed in mid-December of 2019.
Since then, for the most part, the store has sat vacant.
In the middle of the pandemic, the store was used as a storage space for medical supplies. PPE, hand sanitizer, etc. It was also used for a day as the venue for a local church concert. And, for the last few years, it has played home to the Augusta Spirit Halloween store.
Other than that, it has sat vacant.
Over the last few years, there have been several attempts at not only getting a store into the K-Mart space, but also revitalizing the entire Augusta Plaza. Ideas tossed around (and researched) included turning it into apartments and using it as an indoor self storage space. Sadly, nothing has panned out - so far!
All it will take is the right developer / financier and a plan that the City of Augusta is willing to approve.
Here are some ideas for things we'd love to see go into the old K-Mart spot, or at least come to Augusta.
