10 Stores That No Longer Exist in Maine but We Wish Still Did
Maine businesses come and go as the times change, but almost everyone who grew up in this state has fond memories of stores they or their parents used to shop at that are no longer around.
These old stores bring back a lot of memories for me. Ames was our local department store where I grew up in South Paris, Maine. It was a quick trip over two towns over to Oxford to go grocery shopping at Shop 'n Save and head over to Ames to grab whatever we needed at a discount price.
Another place with fond memories in South Paris for me was LaVerdiere's drug stores. They were smart to hop on the video game craze of the 1980s and add an arcade to most of their stores. I dropped many quarters into Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Dig Dug Paperboy, Gauntlet, and Road Blasters at LaVerdiere's.
We asked people to name one of these places on our Facebook page and the response was overwhelming. Most people couldn't stop at just one and gave us an entire list.
Here are 10 of those stores you might remember along with the year that they went out of business. Which of them do you miss the most?
