What’s the Deal With These Random Signs on This Richmond, Maine Lawn?
Richmond, Maine lawn signs
This was talked about a bit toward the beginning of the summer, but a few months later, it's coming back around again to peak the interests of Mainers everywhere. In a recent Reddit post from user acatnamedkaren, Mainers not yet in the know HAVE to know -- what's up with the sign on this Richmond, Maine lawn that keeps changing words?
Maine acts of kindness
It turns out, based on an article that NEWS CENTER Maine ran toward the beginning of summer, it's turned into a bit of a game for the couple that lives inside. It actually stems from an incident that happened about a handful of winters ago, when homeowners Ruthanne Harrison and Doug Chess came back from a coffee break of shoveling their driveway to find some random good Mainer had fully plowed them out.
Not knowing who did it, they had no clue who to show appreciation toward, so they put up a random sign in their front yard that simply said, "Thank You" -- and that's when the fun began. Random people walking by would walk up to them saying, "you're welcome," and the sign madness took off from there.
Ruthanne and Doug told NEWS CENTER Maine that they dug the interaction they were having with their neighbors and random passersby so much, that they decided to change up the signs every couple of weeks by painting some kind of design and topping it off with one random word -- which, to their pleasure, usually contained a word that needed to be looked up.
The coolest part? It's actually become such a hit that they told NEWS CENTER Maine that they'll get random notes in the mail with suggestions for words they should post up, as well as thank you gifts around the holidays for keeping up the fun tradition. It's just one of those unique, fun things that makes Maine, Maine.
