Touched by a Ghost? Here’s the Legend of Portsmouth, New Hampshire’s Point of Graves Burial Ground

Who can resist a good ghost story?

Here in New England, there are countless tales of unexplained happenings and paranormal activity. Portsmouth in particular is home to many alleged hauntings.

For instance, does renowned naval captain John Paul Jones still haunt his Middle Street home? Is the restless soul of a young girl still trapped in the Chase House, shown below?

One popular Portsmouth legend is centered on the Point of Graves Burial Ground, located on Mechanic Street.

According to NHPR, the historic cemetery dates back to the 17th century and is the final resting place of 125 people. It's also said to be the oldest burial ground in New Hampshire.

Those who enter can hear the wind whistling through the trees and the waves of the Piscataqua River rippling out to sea. But are you truly alone?

That depends on what you believe.

According to HauntedHouses.com, stories of paranormal activity include feelings of grief when near the graves of two children, and one tomb glowing in pictures.

Most notably, the website states that several entities (including a woman named Elizabeth Pierce) are said to follow visitors, who often sense that they're not alone. Paranormal investigator Roxie Zwicker claims to have been gently shoved by a spirit as she stood near Elizabeth's grave. Creepy, right?
