When Maine's hands-free driving law went into effect in Maine last September, many supporters of it breathed a sign of relief. But there was a glaring omission in the wording of the bill, and now one lawmaker is trying to fix it.

According to the Bangor Daily News, the law says that you can't use your cell phone while driving on a public way. But it doesn't say anything about parking lots. So as it stands, it's still technically legal for drivers to be on their phones while entering and exiting the parking lot of a local business.

Senator Bill Diamond sponsored the original bill, and now he wants to amend it, to include parking lots.

Given the fact that 20% of auto accidents occur in parking lots, I feel like it makes good sense to include them. Just think of how busy some mall and department store parking lots get. You wouldn't want someone driving up to you as you're walking into a store to be on their phone, right?
