This weekend, my husband and I went for a walk on Higgins Beach in Scarborough.  It was very cold but the sun was shining and there was little wind. We were there at low tide and stumbled upon an old shipwreck buried in the sand.

Because parking is limited in the area, we don't usually spend much time there. So, the shipwreck was new to us.  Doing a little online searching, I have found the wreck is of the Howard W. Middleton.  In heavy fog, she came ashore August 1897 carrying a hull full of coal. The ship was a total loss. Most of the cargo was retrieved, but locals were able to scavenge scattered coal from the beach.  More details of the story can be found at this website. The sands are constantly shifting and what can be seen of the wreck changes over time.
