Maine has taken a bold step to help protect the environment, with a new plastic bag ban that goes into effect next year. According to WMTW, late yesterday, Gov. Jet Mills signed into law a ban on single use plastic bags. Maine is only the third state in the country with such a ban, joining California and New York. And while they're not banned by state law in Hawaii, they've been banned by all individual counties in that state. The Governor's approval of the measure comes just a couple weeks after the state senate passed it, by a vote of 24-11.

I feel like this law is a good idea, considering that we just saw a story last week about how the average person inadvertently consumes an amount of plastic equal to a credit card every week. That's terrifying! For more information on the new law, check out the story from WMTW here.
