Why This Maine Drive-In in Saco Was More Than Just a Movie

I thought the best part of going to the Saco Drive-In would be the movie. 

Turns out... I was completely wrong. 

Don't get me wrong, there's something magical about watching a movie under the stars with popcorn in your lap. But honestly? The movie almost became the background. 

If you've never been to the Saco Drive-In , you might not realize there's a little bit of waiting before the show starts.

Cars are pulling in to their preferred spots, people are grabbing burgers and fries from the delicious Maine Kitchen Food Truck, kids are getting settled, and everyone is just... waiting for the sun to finally go down.

But listen, that's when the magic happened. 

Saco Drive-In Movie Gives You More Then a Feature Presentation

Completely unplanned, a bunch of kids and adults, including my son and his buddy, started a pickup soccer game in the open field.

Within minutes, more kids joined in. No teams. No whistles. Just a big circle of people talking, laughing and kicking a ball. 

Nearby, other kids were running around with glowing neon necklaces as the sky got darker. A few teenagers started kicking around a hacky sack. Parents sat in lawn chairs chatting with complete strangers while little ones laughed until they were out of breath.

I looked around and realized something. 

Hardly anyone was staring at a phone. 

Nobody seemed worried about capturing the perfect Instagram moment. People were actually living the moment. 

It felt like stepping back into the '90s, when summer nights were all about making friends with whoever happened to be there and staying outside until the streetlights, or in this case, the movie screen, came on. 

Maybe that's the real reason drive-ins still matter. .

They're one of the few places left where strangers become neighbors for a night, kids remember how to just play, and everyone slows down long enough to enjoy being together. 

The movie was great. 

But the people? They were the real feature presentation.
